Green Lantern movie to shoot in Mexico? October 11th, 2009

The original plan was to shoot the Green Lantern adaptation in Sydney, Australia — with shooting set to begin in November. Inside Film report that production is expected to move to Mexico, citing currency changes as the primary cause. This also overrides another suggested change that would have seen the movie shooting in Louisiana.

Shooting in Australia would now add $20m to the film’s production costs.

Warner Bros is understood to be preparing to shift its Green Lantern production to Mexico from Australia, where the booming currency has blown out costs.

The latest proposal overrides recent plans to shift the film to the US state of Louisiana (as reported in the October issue of INSIDEFILM) although a final decision has yet to be made.

If the shoot does proceed at Fox Studios Australia it would add more than $US20 million to production costs due to the rising dollar, according to sources.

MGM in financial straits, Bond and RoboCop futures uncertain September 27th, 2009

MGM are, and have been for many years, dealing with significant financial debts, to the tune of almost $4bn. With concerns about the company’s solvency, a recent conference call debated whether the studio should file for bankruptcy in a bid to gain back some of the otherwise lost money.

Should this happen, MGM’s assets might be sold to cover the debts, including the rights to the James Bond franchise, the potential RoboCop remake could never see the light of day. This would inevitably delay Bond 23, and who knows what else.

MGM’s current plan is to convince creditors to waiver interest payments until January 2010, with that money instead going to fund new movies. There’s a lot up in the air right now, but we’ll keep you posted.

“There is nobody, there’s no script, there’s nothing. […] It can’t possibly be made before 2011 because ‘Inception’ is such a big picture.”

[…]

“Johnny Depp is great in anything, but there is no Johnny Depp in this Batman. They tell me in no uncertain terms.“
